About River Watch
RiverWatch is UNESCO IHP’s citizen science initiative for freshwater monitoring. It engages communities in the co-production of water knowledge, particularly in vulnerable and underserved regions, where local observations can fill critical data gaps. By bridging formal science with indigenous and local knowledge, RiverWatch enhances understanding of hydrological processes, strengthens adaptation strategies, and builds resilience to climate and water-related risks. Through education, capacity-building, and inclusive participation, the initiative promotes improved water management, environmental stewardship, and climate action.
