About Citizen Science

Citizen Science is increasingly recognised for advancing knowledge and connecting science with society. By engaging communities in observing, monitoring, and analysing information, it expands the reach of professional research, fills critical data gaps, and supports informed decision making at all levels. At the same time, it empowers communities by deepening understanding of their environment, fostering ownership of solutions, and promoting inclusive participation.

In this way, citizen science serves both as a source of valuable evidence and as a platform for engagement and collective action that contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals.

On this platform, you will find the open-source UNESCO Citizen Science Toolbox with its data portal and mobile application designed to support Citizen Science initiatives aligned with UNESCO’s mandate.
