About Kruger2Canyons Biosphere Reserve in Be Resilient

The Freshwater Monitoring Citizen Science Project is a key initiative aimed at assessing and enhancing the health and sustainability of freshwater ecosystems in the ecologically
diverse Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Region (K2C). Launched in 2022 under the Flemish-funded UNESCO Be-Resilient Project, the programme actively involves local, community-based
citizen scientists in water monitoring efforts, providing them with training in standardized freshwater monitoring protocols.

The project spans several important river systems, including:

  • The Motlamogatsana River in Bushbuckridge Municipality
  • The Moetladimo and Kubjaname Rivers in Maruleng Municipality— tributaries of the Klasserie and Olifants Rivers, respectively.
  • The Mohlatsengwana, Marakalala, Moremela, and Treur Rivers—all feeding into the Blyde River.
  • The Lower Wilgespruit, Upper Wilgespruit, Lower Broederstroom, Upper Broederstroom, Kantoorspruit, and Stanford Lake in the Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality, which are
tributaries of the Upper Letaba Catchment.
  • These water bodies are essential for sustaining biodiversity, providing healthy drinking water, supporting agriculture, and maintaining overall ecological balance.
  • Monitoring these water bodies is essential for: detecting pollution, conserving biodiversity, informing management practices and community well-being.
  • The data collection provides a detailed insights into the current state and trends of our ecosystems.
